It is Thursday and I have a new "In The Spolight" for you.
This time with "Last of the Misfit Heroes"
Enjoy!
Thank you so much for having this chat with us.
How did you guys meet, and what is Last of the Misfit Heroes all about?
- Myself and Anj (Andrew Jackman/bass) go back a long way — we met when we were five. We started school together and have been best mates ever since. We grew up together and got into music and guitar at the same time. We’ve played in quite a few bands before, so when I was looking to form a new project, Anj was the first person I spoke to. As well as being my best mate, he’s also a great bass player!
Ciaran (Crowley/drums) joined us at the end of 2022 when our previous drummer — and my cousin — Chris (Catt) left the band.
Last of the Misfit Heroes came about in April 2019.
I had been dealing with personal issues — stress, anxiety, and depression that had built up over the years. I was looking for ways to cope and to find purpose in music again.
Our first album, Hope for the Hopeless, touches on a lot of mental health issues.
The writing process became a form of therapy for me and a way to release my feelings
For those new to your music, what can they expect?
- You can expect a full-on, hard-edged rock band.
We keep the songs short and catchy, with plenty of melody layered over the heavier tracks.
You have a special sound — where does it come from? Where do you find your inspiration?
- The sound has really come about naturally.
Being a three-piece, there’s a lot of space for each of us to put our own stamp on the songs.
With the writing, I tend to create the music and lyrics first, then Anj and Ciaran add their parts and it grows from there.
Personally, I listen to so many different styles of music, and they all feed into my writing.
With the newer material, there’s definitely been a grunge influence, along with inspiration from ’70s and ’80s British bands like The Clash, The Stranglers, and Squeeze.
I also listen a lot to modern bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Biffy Clyro.
Mix all that together and you get Last of the Misfit Heroes’ sound!
Which is more fun — recording music, making music videos, or playing live?
- We enjoy all those parts of being in a band.
We had a great time recording our new EP, Power, Fear, Control, at The Joplin House in Kent last October. We stayed at the studio for a couple of days and got through a lot of work in that time.
With the videos, we’re very lucky — our good friend Gareth (Benton-McCloud) is an excellent film director and has worked on all our videos so far. We have a great relationship and he really captures the meaning of the songs visually.
We’ve been a bit quiet on the live front this year.
We wanted to take our time and get the new EP released before hitting the stage again.
Our first gig of 2025 will be at SavFest on 15th August — a great festival in aid of Ian’s Chain charity.
What are you currently working on?
- We’re working on new videos to support the new EP, which you’ll see released over the next few months. I’m also writing new material that we’ll start developing while promoting the EP.
What can we expect from you in the future?
- In the near future, you’ll see us playing a lot more live shows, and I’d expect a new EP at some point in the new year.
It’s a bit too early to say which musical direction we’ll take, but I can see it getting heavier in places and softer in others.
In the meantime, it’s a great chance for everyone to check out the new material on Power, Fear, Control!
What is the one thing you would like your fans to know?
- That we’re still here!
We’ve been quiet on the live front this year, but that’s set to change.
We built up a bit of a following during the COVID years, but sometimes life takes over. We’d like to thank everyone who’s still supporting us — it really means a lot.
What is the one thing you would like the music industry to know?
- The same thing, really — we’re still here!
We’ll be showcasing material from the new EP with videos and live shows, so it’s worth keeping an eye on us.
